The Artist Says:

“The dazzling sunlight, intense colors, and the dry, clear air of the American Southwest are in my bones… I paint what I cannot express in words.”

Biography

Kathryn Willis, a native Arizonan now splits the year between Arizona and Idaho and travels along the way.   Though long inspired by beauty around the world,  it was a life-changing journey, in 2000,  walking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago de Compestela in Spain  that awakened her desire to express her experience in the world through art.  This desire has blossomed into a passion for painting, and the “camino spirit” lives on in vibrant paintings of her American West homeland.
The sensuous, brilliant hues of oil paints and the ability to create texture are particularly suited to her expressive colorist style. Contemporary Western American landscape art is her primary passion--though she also paints urban, still-life and figurative subjects.
An avid hiker and trail runner, Kathy’s love of the outdoors is apparent in her bold, abstracted landscapes. Using brushstroke, palette knife, and color in richly textured compositions, she strives to interpret the emotion and energy she experiences in relation to each subject. Starting most landscapes on location, these small studies provide the inspiration and source material for larger paintings created in the studio.
“The dazzling sunlight, intense colors, and the dry, clear air of the American Southwest are in my bones… I paint what I cannot express in words.”
