Kathryn L. Wernsman
Haxtun, Colorado
Kathy grew up in Pueblo, Co. with and interest in art at a young age. She was encouraged by her mother as a child but wasn't able to pursue her interest in art until she attended University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She received a BA in Fine Arts and a K-12 Art Education endorsement and later earned her Masters in Education from Grand Canyon University in Arizona.
She taught K-12 Art for 34 years in Fleming, Co. She retired in 2011 and began taking drawing and painting classes at Northeastern Junior College, taking workshops at the Art Students League, and other venues.
She found that oils were her media of choice and her passion was painting the human figure or portraiture. She originally began studying classical portraits and striving for realism.
Kathy now uses her own photos to create a composition with striking and dramatic lighting, while using complementary colors to enhance and intensify her work. Her muse tends to be her family and those who share the experience of living in rural Colorado. Kathy is striving to portray the human spirit and touch her viewers with her narrative paintings.
Kathy exhibits her art regionally and is in private collections. She has been awarded honors in several local shows.
