Artist Kathleen Wiley

An example of fine art by Kathleen Wiley

Photo of Kathleen Wiley

At an early age Kathleen Wiley began creating images inspired from experiences on her family's horse farm in Western New York and annual camping trips in the Canadian wilderness.  She photographed her first wild black bear on one such trip when she was just 8 years old.  Since then she has enjoyed photographing nature and using these references as inspiration for her paintings.  Although Kathleen studied graphic design at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh she feels it is her extensive study of nature and collection of reference photos that aid her in creating realistic paintings.  In a statement from the artist Kathleen said, "my photographs give me accuracy, but my sketches and field experience allow me to create the illusion of depth.  My goal is not to reproduce a photograph, but to have my painting filled with light, depth, atmosphere and the varied textures found in nature. I want my paintings to tell a story and evoke emotions."  She is a nationally award winning artist who has had numerous solo exhibits in both galleries and institutes, such as The Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, NY.  She has also participated in shows around the country including "The Southeast Wildlife Exhibition" in Charleston, SC, "Wings and Wildlife" at The Pittsburgh Aviary in Pittsburgh, PA and "The Flowertown Festival" in Summerville, SC. Kathleen lives with her husband, two daughters and three dogs in Walhalla, SC. A renovated barn on the property was recently converted into her dream studio.
