Biography

“Art is my oxygen- and my preferred form of therapy.   I find the challenge of interpreting for the viewer, that which I see and feel in the moment, totally compelling.  Whether in plein air (outdoors) or the studio, my focus is on capturing a moment’s light, atmosphere and emotional content.  I want you to experience the weather, connect with the figure.”

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Karen Winston-Levin is currently a resident of Western Howard County, Maryland.  Art has always been an underlying theme in her life.  During her career in psychiatric nursing, she explored the use of art therapy as an adjunctive treatment method, participating in workshops based on the work of Dr. Gregg M. Furth and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.   She has been more fully pursuing her lifelong passion for art since her retirement.  Introduced to plein air painting during an intensive workshop in Provence in 2009, the experience continues to inform her work. She has since found inspiration in the tradition of other contemporary impressionists, studying with them in workshops whenever possible.

Karen paints land, sea and cityscapes, and people she has met along the way wherever her travels take her.
She participates in juried and plein air events and exhibits in galleries throughout Maryland.   She is an Associate Member of the Artists Gallery in Frederick MD.
Her art is in private collections along the East Coast.
