Karen Pinto has been a ceramic artist since she graduated from Southern CT State University in 1976 with a BA in Studio Art (concentration in ceramics). Her father used to joke that he sent her to college to learn how to “play in the mud”. Born in Bridgeport, CT, Karen spent twelve years in the arts community in New Haven, CT before moving to Newtown, CT in 1985.Karen has exhibited her work in New England and the tri-state area. A member of The CT Clay Artists since 1987, she has held many offices in the organization including president, secretary, program director and currently treasurer. She is also a member of  the Society of Creative Arts of Newtown, Ct. and Gallery 25 of New Milford, CT, a co-op gallery.Karen loves to teach others how to “play in the mud”. She has been teaching continuously since her college days in many programs for children and adults. Among her proudest accomplishments in teaching and community-based activities are “Empty Bowls” fundraisers for a health center and soup kitchen, where she, her colleagues and students made bowls which were filled with soup and sold. She also helped organize and run a year-long series of workshops for Healing Newtown through the Arts, after the shooting tragedy in her hometown in 2012.Sea life is the theme of Karen’s current work. She was first inspired by a trip to a sea turtle conservation farm in Mexico. Since then, she has studied and depicted many ocean creatures in her work. Karen loves to sculpt as well as wheel throw and hand build her pottery. She often combines these techniques. Karen continues to be inspired by her travels to many oceanic places, recently to the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands.
