The Artist Says:

I find great excitement in the spontaneity and surprises of watercolor, especially while painting my first love....the florals.  My intrigue with florals is to capture the essence of the patterns and colors, and to portray me feelings of beauty to the viewer.  Usually, I have Mozart music playing while I paint and  I find it increases my creativity a great deal.  My hope is to pass on my love of nature to the viewers of my artwork.

I believe art is a lifelong learning experience, and it is important to pass on our knowledge to other artists as well as glean information from past and present masters.

Karen has lived in Alaska since 1968, painting Alaskan scenes, florals and still life in watercolor, oils and acrylics. She considers herself a colorist, depicting Alaska and nature through light and color.  She has received numerous awards and her work is in collections throughout the country. She is a signature member of the Alaska Watercolor Society, a member of the Valley Fine Arts Association, Talkeetna Artist's Guild, Girdwood Center for Visual Arts and AWC Paint Pusher's. One of her larger works now hangs in the new Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska, an oil painting of a Bald Eagle was selected as one-of-fifty finalists for the state of Alaska in the Paint America 100 Competition in 2006 and her watercolor, "Alaskan Autumn" was chosen for the 2007-2008 Mat-Su College Bulletin Cover.  She recently received "honorable mention" at the first annual Valley Fine Arts Association Juried Art Show.  She is currently serving as President of that organization. She loves to spend time in her large perennial garden, where she has plants from as far away as the Himalyan Mountains.  She has fun photographing the flowers to later use for reference for painting them.   She served as President of the local garden club for three years and is a Master Gardener.  When she isn't in the garden, she spends time flying around Alaska with her husband in their Cessna 185 or the Super Cub.  When in the mood to travel by road, they take time off to travel in their Mountain Aire motor home.  During the summer adventure of 2007, they traveled from Rockport, Texas to the upper peninsula of Michigan and up the Alcan Highway through Canada back to Alaska.
