Biography


 
I was born in Billings MT and grew up in 7 different towns in Northeast Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana. My art background includes a Graphic art course at Spokane Falls college in WA, thereafter a job in a graphic art studio in Phoenix AZ as a staff artist.  In Gillette WY, I began to work more on portraits as I raised a family.  Through the years, I have been involved in local and regional art shows, and have won a number of awards. I have taught children’s classes and adult portraiture classes through the years as well.       
 In 1988 pastels became my medium of choice.  It was then that I began to do commissioned portraits of people and of animals, and  I started my official business "Portrait Creations by Karen Barton".  Portraiture, more than any other art form, creates heirloom treasures. It is that element of the genre that keeps me in it.  Most of my portraits can be found in private homes.     
 
In the past few years I have branched out with my work.  I have found not just one genre, and medium, but several that I love and call my own.  I work in pastels, oils, acrylics, charcoal, and graphite. My adventures in acrylic paint led me to the bright colors and patterns that turn hair  into a flowing, flowering, feast for the eyes. Cold wax medium is another tool that has afforded me a new dimension. My skills in portraiture combined with an experimental abstract approach makes for a sort of surrealism that can take on a life of it's own .  I feel free to use whatever style I feel fits the subject and I don't limit myself to a single approach.
