Judy, the daughter of a coal miner father and homemaking mother, grew up in the beautiful Eastern Kentucky mountains of Appalachia.  She and her brothers and sisters were raised on a working farm, where their father taught that hard work would provide the necessities and their mother taught that truly a proverbial "silk purse can be made out of a sow’s ear.  Judy says, " As I pursue an art career,  I am reminded that something lovely can be created simply with my paint and love of a subject.” As an artist living in Charleston, South Carolina, Judy Walters applies her coal miner daughter’s work ethic and can-do creativity to her pursuit of artistic achievement.
Her rural Kentucky childhood had a great influence in shaping Judy’s creative vision.  Most everything her family needed came from the crops and animals raised on their farm. To feed the imagination, the mountains and farmlands of Kentucky proved to be a land of plenty. Judy remembers countless adventures in the fields, woodlands and creek winding through their mountain 'holler' home. “Although there was always work to do growing up, there was never a dull moment with so many people bustling around,” she recalls. "Every aspect of my life was tied to my love of family, nature and working the land.”
Such powerful memories of her family’s abiding love, and the perennial colors and rhythms she witnessed daily, are all brought to life in her paintings.  The glorious Appalachian sunsets, the ever-changing seasonal colors have had a lasting impression on Judy  as visually expressed in her work. “I remember how beautiful the jars of red tomatoes looked as we canned them every summer, and the morning dew glistening off the newly mowed hay in the fall.
