Photo of Joy Smith

Joy is a native of South Carolina where, after finishing nursing school and anesthesia school, and after several moves within and outside of the country with her husband,  returned to Wilmington DE where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Wilmington University.  She transitioned to emergency nursing which she continued until her recent retirement.  She now is a Volunteer Chaplain at Nemours, The duPont Hospital for Children.
Over this time she and her husband raised two children and now have seven much loved grandchildren.  Also during this time she developed an avid interest in painting in pastels and oil paint.  She began her studies in art with portraiture, Marge Brichler of Houston, Texas.  She continued with Russell Finley, studio painting in Newark DE,  watercolor with Carolyn Anderson, Wilmington DE,  still life and studio painting with Al Stazeski at the Delaware Art Museum.
She has attended workshops with Bill Tierney at Mt Cuba, Wilmington, plein air painting with Jo Ridge Kelley in Waynesville N.C., Mary Page Evans of Wilmington,  Morgan Samuel Price in Cashiers, N.C., and the past two summers has attended workshops with Jenny Buckner of Waynesville, NC.  She currently attends weekly clinics with Nancy Tankersly at the Easton Studio in Easton, Maryland.  Through the Easton Studio she  recently was greatly honored to have attended a week long workshop with well known California artist, Ken Auster before his untimely passing.
Though she enjoys oil painting en plein air and still life,  she recently is enjoying painting animals in oil as commissions.
Her work hangs in private collections in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Gijon, Spain.
