An example of fine art by Joyce Smith

I have always loved drawing and painting but was involved with raising 3 children and my career as a Clinical Social Worker since 1979.  In 2000 I decided to pursue my dormant talent for painting and enrolled in a portrait class at the Washington Studio School.  From there I turned to study at the Yellow Barn studio  in Bethesda, Md. with founder Walter Bartman.  I continued study with Christine Lashley, Maud Taber-Thomas  and Gonzalo Ruiz Navarro.   I have been a Maine painter since 2002, residing in Georgetown with my husband and dog and spending winter months in Bethesda, Md.   My paintings have been exhibited in juried shows at the Yellow Barn Studio in Maryland , Kefauver Studio & Gallery, River Arts Gallery in Damariscotta and the Yarmouth Arts Festival in Maine.  I had a solo show at the Georgetown Town Office summer, 2019 and organized a Pop Up Art show in Georgetown Aug., 2020.  My paintings have sold in Washington, DC, Yarmouth, Georgetown, Damariscotta and Bath, Maine. My style is interpretive realism using fine oils on canvas and board. I paint both plein air and studio landscapes, seascapes and studio portraits.
Maine offers infinite painting inspiration with changing seasons, big sky, forests,  ocean and marshes.  Capturing the values, play of lights and darks, and the temperature of warm and cool colors is fascinating to me and brings me endless challenge and joy.
