Joyce is a lawyer turned oil painter who has made her home in Charleston since 2014. After growing up in the charming port town of Annapolis, MD, Joyce went to law school in Boston and ultimately lived and worked in the New York City area for most of her life. Her journey from practicing attorney to artist was gradual and unexpected, yet every twist and turn of her life experience, including her move to Charleston, has informed her artistic passion and her style as a painter.
Her initial interest in art was sparked on a business trip to Paris she took for her first job.  Seeing the works of Monet, Manet, Renoir and Cezanne in person, she experienced what the French call a coup de foudre: literally a thunderbolt, but more appropriately translated as love at first sight. From then on, she took every opportunity to study in the museums of New York and in each city she visited. She read as much as she could about the masters, their methods and their lives.
It would be a long time, though, before Joyce’s busy professional and family life would allow the time to begin her own life as a painter. When the time came, it was as a silver lining to an otherwise difficult life transition. Almost 10 years ago, health issues required Joyce to take an extended sabbatical from her law practice to care for her young child. Seeking a creative outlet during that challenging time, she picked up a brush and some oil paint. “The transition from hobbyist to artist was not an easy or a quick one, but I’ve never looked back on my old career as a lawyer.”
