Biography


John Barrett was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1952, and grew up in Manhattan Beach, California. He began pursuing his career as an artist in the late 1960's influenced by his great-grandfather a painter. His grandmother, a photographer and wood worker, gave him his first oil paints and enrolled him in drawing lessons at age 10.
 
John suffered a brain injury as a child and was diagnosed with learning disabilities in the1950s. In spite of his limitations in reading and spelling he pursued his education at El Camino College in Torrance, California. Living in a garage, with limited resources, and determined to learn more about making art, John persevered at the college from 1971 to 1974. Eventually he was instrumental in initiating the schools' first Lithography Lab, and became a student teacher in Lithography and Mono-prints.     
 

He has participated in group shows at the Upstairs Gallery in Manhattan Beach, California
El Camino College, Torrance, California,
Mira Costa College, San Diego, California,
Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo for their annual Learning Disabilities Conference
San Luis Obispo Art Center Opening Minds shows and The Open Studio Tours.

In the 1980's he designed a line of hand-painted Sweatshirt Dresses for La Plage. Mr. Barrett's  art encompasses a variety of forms from pastels and dry pigments on paper, to Mono prints, oil paint on linen and cotton canvas, and ceramics. In 1996 he created Wayward Wiener Dog Designs; funny whimsical illustrations of Dachshunds and cats transferred on to t-shirts, magnets, cards, and prints. His illustrations were shown at Very Special Arts of California in Santa Ana, California.  He has designed album covers, and book covers, along with business logos.
