Biography


 Joellen (Flores) Simmons, an army military brat, retired from Austin, to Rockport, Texas, to paint  the coastal landscape and local birds. Her earlier works focused on historical Texas locations, in oils.  Her popular, "Old Alamo", is available as a limited edition Giclee. It was featured on the cover of Southwest Art magazine in 2008, and highlighted at a San Antonio conference by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.   Joellen also enjoys painting  American Indian Art, with themes around a white buffalo. Coastal birds and landscapes are exhibited at the members exhibits, at Rockport Center for the Arts. Two special exhibits are at  fine restaurants in Rockport, called Latitude 28.02  and 495 Chesapeake Eats.  Although she usually paints in a realistic style, her colorful acrylic abstracts are surreal and impressionistic.  Commissioned art accepted.  View former art work at www.myexhibition.com.
 
Joellen was  a charter member  of the Visual Arts United of Austin, President and board member of the  Buda  Fine Arts and Jazz Festival,   The Creative Arts Society, and was  a member of the Wimberly Art Guild.  Joellen is currently a member of the Rockport Arts Center, Rockport Cultural Arts District, and the Rockport Chamber.  She enjoys researching her paternal surname(Flores/Flowers/Le Fleur) including  her relation, David Crockett. She is a charter member of the Manchaca Onion Creek Historical Association.
After retirement from a successful career in Austin, Texas,  in rehabilitation and special education with the state of Texas , she and her husband Ron, live at Bahia Bay, where she  paints, volunteers and  writes. Her landscapes are from sketches and photos  taken when she was a "military brat" of locations in  Europe, Panama, and throughout the United States as well as when she was "back- packing" across Europe, at age 19, where she experienced the many sides  of  art in Europe.
