Jenna Darkow grew up in Tiverton, RI. She went to school at Ithaca College to study Occupational Therapy, but being drawn to art her whole life, found herself taking as many art classes as possible each year. Jenna graduated with her masters in Occupational Therapy and a minor in Art in 2013. After college, she moved back to RI to begin her career and began studying pastels weekly in Tiverton with the Bow House Studio Pastel group. Jenna moved to Nantucket in 2016 and has been a part of the Nantucket Artists Association since 2017, showing her pastels in local gallery shows, including juried shows and the wet paint auction.
Since studying at the Bow House Studio in Tiverton, Jenna has truly fallen in love with pastels. She loves how they are such a malleable, forgiving, and vibrant medium, as well as how they allow a freedom for making changes while tolerating various types of blending. She also likes that she can use pastels with speed, sometimes finishing a work in 3-6 hours without having to wait for anything to dry before layering and blending more pigment. While working with pastels, Jenna has been most inspired by seascapes and nature in Nantucket. What makes her most unique as an artist is the bold, vibrant, and contrasting colors she uses to highlight and emphasize the imagery in her work.
