Jean (Thompson) Schwartz, born and raised in New Jersey, is now a longtime resident of Virginia. Working primarily in oil she enjoys painting en plein air and in her home studio. However, it is her time spent in the field painting and observing that informs her studio work. Her subjects are varied and include landscape, seascapes and cityscapes but in all her focus is on light and atmosphere.
Jean majored in Fine Arts at Upsala College where she studied studio art as well as art history. Her love of art history led her to earn a certificate from L'Ecole du Louvre in Paris between her junior and senior years. After graduating she returned to Paris to spend a year working and furthering her studies. It was in Paris that she had her first gallery exhibit, a two person show that began her career as an exhibiting artist. Her focus was on abstraction but with the landscape as reference.
Returning to the U.S.she moved to upstate New York for several years where she continued to exhibit her work in galleries and regional exhibits before moving to Washington DC. There she was represented by a gallery on Capitol Hill and her work began to become representational and evolved into realism.  Around the same time she developed an interest in landscape design and decided to pursue it as a second career. She attended George Washington University, graduated from the Landscape Design Program and started her own design business. That work furthered her love of landscape painting and after 12 years she closed her business and returned to painting full time.
"Early in my studies I admired the atospheric light of the Hudson River School Luminists as well as the American Tonalists. Over the last decade I have been revisiting those paintings and they have influenced my work. [...]
