About the Artist
Growing up in rural Colorado, being outdoors and surrounded with nature, the seed to paint was planted early in life.  That seed took root at age 22, when Jean began serious art studies, taking oil painting classes and making many trips to art museums to study the best.  Jean earned a B.A. degree in Fine art with honors from Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado.  Additional art studies included American River College in Sacramento, California, and Scottsdale Art School in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Jean has exhibited in galleries and museums around country, such as the Great Plains Art Museum, Museum of Western Art, Pearce Art Museum, Museum of the Southwest, and more.  Professional affiliations include Oil Painters of America, American Plains Artists, and American Women Artists.  Jean shares her rural western Colorado home with her husband, who also shares her love of art and the outdoors.  When Jean isn't painting, and the chores are done, she enjoys going on hikes, riding their horses, or exploring old jeep trails in the surrounding scenic mountainous landscape.
Artist Statement
My paintings portray the story of a simpler life, historical and present, the people, their animals and events, planned and unplanned, that are a part of everyday living.  Models are the sources of inspiration for my paintings, taking me to several states to working cowboy ranches and Native American lands for inspiration.  The way sunlight bathes a landscape from a dramatic angle, or a horse lit by light from an emerging sun at day break, makes and impression in my mind that tells me "That is a painting!".  In my studio and from life studies, I recreate the life with paint on canvas that is so characteristic of the western life and landscape.
