I am Midwest native who attended both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. After receiving my undergraduate degree in Biological/ Medical Illustration, I worked as an illustrator at a software company until I left the Midwest for the Pacific Northwest. In Seattle, I worked for an online photography image company and participated in a vibrant creative community. Although I started painting as a teenager, with the help of an excellent art teacher, and took art classes in college, it was in Seattle that I started living a bit of an artist’s life by showing work in an artist-run gallery and local coffee houses.  


After meeting my wife, we relocated to the East Coast, and I started painting still-life setups in a more representational style. Painting and drawing from life is my preferred approach to making art.  The recent plein air "painting outdoors"  movement caught my attention, and I thought, "I can do that!”  Painting outdoors can be an  escape from life's responsibilities for a few hours, setting up the easel, dealing with ever-changing weather challenges, all while quietly observing and painting.  Sometimes, after my three kids are asleep , I'll grab my easel and set up to paint a scene in my neighborhood. 

To me what is fascinating about painting outdoors is how a scene changes depending on the time of day, the change of season, and weather patterns. There is an urge within me to capture these moments: the marks put down in paint record the moment, a feeling, and a piece of time. 

Over the years I have gained priceless drawing and painting knowledge by taking workshops with great artists like Stapleton Kearns, Tim Bell, John Ebersberger, and Matthew Zoll. And I have begun to share what I have learned through these artists and my own study with others by [...]
