The Artist Says:

It is quite wonderful when someone loves my art and I believe that pleasure is a strong  motivator for most artists. However, for me the most important thing about my art is the process of creation. It is nearly impossible to define my mental or emotional state while I am creating. While drawing or painting, I enter a place without time, without stress, and find my happiest reality. I do know one thing: something constantly pulls me to that place of discovery and creation.

Virginia artist Jan Southard divides her artistic attentions among several art forms, including painting, sculpture using various media, and illustration. Most recently Jan has studied hand-building porcelain sculpture with Nancy Benedetti at "At HOME with Suzanne." Jan concentrates on original porcelain figures, bowls, vases and jewelry pieces.
An additional 3D format that Jan has worked in is felting, often collaborating with local felting artist, Valerie Johnson, whom she met when they were Resident Artists at the Arts Center in Smithfield, VA.
Jan has worked on illustrations for several books two of which have been published. She illustrated “Ookie!” a children’s book written by Emily Stoll and once again collaborated with Valerie Johnson, illustrating Val’s e-book “Otters in the Attic.”
Jan regularly shows her pastels and watercolors at the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Art Show and Sale in Suffolk, VA and has her work displayed in several area gift shops including Jester’s in Suffolk and Auntie M’s American Cottage in Yorktown. Be sure to check out Pop-Shop by Jo Louise where Jan has her work twice a year during the special openings of this fantastic shop! Look at the shop's Facebook page: Pop-Shop by Jo Louise.
Jan’s early works portraying wildlife won recognition and appreciation in major art shows from North Carolina to Maine with several works being displayed in museums such as the Ward Museum in Salisbury, MD, the Marine Science Museum in Virginia Beach and the San Bernardino County Museum in CA.
