He was especially interested in photographing coastal scenes using infrared film and that became the foundation for much of his work with film.Jan is a landscape architect by profession. His concern for environmental issues led him to pursue two degrees from North Carolina State University, a BS in Conservation from the School of Forestry and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the School of Design. While he was a principal in a design firm, Jan earned an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, he completed the Certificate program at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.Jan's photography has won several awards and has been featured in state and local exhibits. He processed and printed his own B&W work.Jan and his wife, Martha Walton, a photography instructor at Cardinal Gibbons High School, live in Raleigh with their four cats, two chickens, one rabbit and The Dog.
