James Minden - Bio
James Minden was born in Portland, Oregon. He attended Portland State University where he studied social science and art, eventually deciding to concentrate on painting. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art in 1977 and has since exhibited his art professionally. Minden lived and worked in New York City in the 1980’s and was one of the founders of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, centered in DUMBO where he lived at the time. He returned to Portland in 1991. After concentrating on painting, drawing and printmaking for his entire career, in 2011 he began to make and exhibit art that was very different, handmade specular or abrasion reflection holograms, which he called light drawings. Though he did not invent the basic process, he refined it and developed new processes that enabled him to make them up to 8 x 6 feet in size. The processes have continued to evolve into what he calls hybrid paintings, where color and value play an equal role to light reflection. He remains one of the only artists working in this medium anywhere. Minden’s artworks are included in museum, private and corporate collections across the US. He is currently represented by Augen Gallery in Portland, Muriel Guepin Gallery in New York, Guthrie Contemporary in New Orleans and the SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum.
