Jacqueline Emery was born in Holland and raised in Holland, the UK, Switzerland and the US, which earned her the nickname: ‘the Flying
Dutchman’. She currently resides on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, but spends her summers painting on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Jacqueline got her artistic start early in life: One of her earliest memories is visiting her grandparents and being ‘banished’ to the kitchen so that adults could talk about subjects judged not fit for ‘tender’ ears. During these hours alone she amused herself by copying the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, and taught herself to draw. Naturally all art is appreciated and celebrated in Holland, and her mother encouraged her interest by giving her an oil painting kit for her 9th birthday, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Jacqueline went to college in the US, and after college lived and worked for a period in Germany where she was exposed to the French art of painting on silk, which is more of a water color technique. She painted for many years in the traditional ‘Serti’ technique, but missed the spontaneity of being able to work in oils.
After meeting her American-born husband-to-be in Germany, she moved back to the US and settled in the Boston area. She recently retired and moved to South Carolina, where she started painting again. Jackie finds it ironic that she left the ‘Low Country’ (the Netherlands) of Europe, to resettle in the ‘Low Country’ in South Carolina!
Jacqueline is a self-taught artist who has mastered a realistic style of landscape painting. Now a full-time artist, working in Acrylics, she uses the unique glazing and shadowing techniques she learned as a silk painter to bring richness and depth to her paintings.
