Ian was born in Pretoria South Africa in 1959 and he received a Bachelor's and Master's degree at the University of Miami in 1980 and 1983 respectively. While he has studied with Betty Billups, Kathleen Wobie, Allison LeBaron and  Annie Pais and has attended classes at the Sarratt Art Studios at Vanderbilt University, he is primarily self taught. He has painted since 1999.

I have always been influenced by art with strong color and an expressive nature. I admire the Impressionist, the Fauves and the Expressionists and specifically the work of Van Gogh, Matisse, Derain, Nolde, Kokoschka, Schiele, Modigliani, Soutine and Auerbach. I have been fortunate to visit art museums and galleries all over the world which has exposed me to a wide variety of art. My primary goal is for the creative struggle to be evident on the canvas and for it to capture as much of the viewer's attention as the content of the painting. I attempt, to use Mallarme's famous phrase, "To paint not the thing, but the effect it produces."
