Photo of Helen Kunze

Helen graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with a BFA, in Illustration and Design. She worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for 4 years as an artist, designing and illustrating gift wrap and party products. After Hallmark she lived and worked as a freelance illustrator in Des Moines IA, Albuquerque NM, and St. Louis MO. She and her husband moved to Carthage MO in 1995 and she freelanced until they added children to their family.
In 2009, she began taking oil painting workshops and painting plein air. Helen loved being able to get color down on the canvas so quickly and enjoyed the bold and loose quality she found in the medium. Helen has a strong sense of design and color. She has received several awards for her studio and plein air paintings. She has learned a great deal from studying with Jeff Legg, John Porter Lasater, Jason Sacran, and John Pototschnik.
Helen is a founding member of the plein air painting group “Day Trippers of Southwest Missouri”.   She shared a studio with three other women artists at “Drawn Together Studio” in Carthage for 3 years until she opened a yoga studio in Carthage and moved her art studio into the back of it.
Helen got busy with life and family for the past few years and is getting back to her painting!
Helen served on the board of artCentral, a non-profit community art center in Carthage, MO from 1996-1999 and served again from 2008 to 2018.
