An example of fine art by Gretchen Niver

Despite an educational and professional background in graphic arts, handcrafts always drew my heart.  I grew up in Bedford, Ohio, the daughter of a mother who hooked rugs, caned chairs, and did pine needle basketry, so I can thank her for my talents.  I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Communications, and worked in advertising and graphic design for a number of years. After working in media such as batik, silk screen, and airbrush on fabric, I began working in stained glass in 1980 and never turned back.
I spent the first 15 years designing and building traditional, copper foil stained glass panels, boxes, lamps, and other items.  In the building of our dream home in lovely Chatham County, NC, I learned to make fused glass tiles, and have since added fused and slumped glass work to my portfolio, often combining methods in my creations.
Chatham County has a wealth of talented artists.  They provide me great inspiration and comaraderie, and we participate in an annual Open Studio Tour that's been a great experience over the years.  I love taking on commission work that challenges my skills, especially in terms of naturalistic designs; plants, flowers, animals and landscapes are my favorite themes.  However, the variety of color and texture available in glass can also easily lend itself to abstract creations.
