The Artist Says:

One definition of creativity is seeing the same thing others see but seeing it differently.  Art is a creative process.

I am a geologist, an environmentalist, and an artist.  Nature is the common denominator and painting brings it all together.
Oil paints are my principal medium.  In both plein air and in the studio, I capture the wonderment of nature and associated human artifacts that are subject to change with time.  My landscape paintings cover Arizona, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, and National and State Parks in the Western States.

I was born in Sioux City, Iowa in February 1937, and now reside in Bend, Oregon.  With BS and MS degrees in geology, I worked for a large international oil company for 31 years in many different countries as a geologist and, later in the US as a manager.  This has given me the mental discipline necessary to continuously improve my painting skills and to know that failure lies on the pathway to success.

Essentially, I am self-taught in art.  Reading the more in-depth art books, in particular "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid, provided me with an appropriate philosophy and approach to art.  Many fellow artists, including my artist wife, voluntarily help with the actual practice of painting.  I complete more than 100 paintings a year.  I also continuously review the paintings of artists I admire - inspiration plus knowledge gained.

My paintings have garnered honorable mention in the Aritist's Magazine in 2011, juried into the Zion National Park Anniversary show which traveled the US for 2years, and juried into the Oil Painters of America National Show in 2006 and in the Oil Painters of America Regional Show in 2006 and 2016.  My sold paintings reside in many states and in Europe.
