Biography

I paint in watercolor on Aquabord. This non-absorptive surface allows me to manipulate the paint in ways that paper would not allow. I can lift paint off and make changes to my painting as I go, which is a big advantage when painting outdoors, 'en plein air' which I like to do often. Aquabord is an archival and durable surface which can be varnished after a painting is completed so that finished works are framed like oil paintings, without mats and glass.
Largely self-taught, I did take some watercolor classes and workshops to get me started on the right track, but since those early days, I have let experience be my guide and just painted. I think painting outdoors, 'en plein air', with all it's difficulties and challenges, has helped me to speed up and hone my skills. My college degree is in Recreation, with an emphasis on Parks and Natural Resources, so it does seem appropriate that I would gravitate to landscape painting and that I would do it outside!I live in the San Bernardino National Forest in the small town of Angelus Oaks, California, with my husband, Richard Pena. Besides mountain scenery, I enjoy painting historic buildings and landscapes with wildflowers. You can see my work at local art shows, and I have a few paintings on display in the boutique at Riverside Art Museum, and the giftshop at the Kimberly Crest Mansion in Redlands. Check my EVENTS page for upcoming shows.
