Biography

Curiosity has a way of coloring the way we live life and it has always colored the way I approach my art. As a child my inclination of questioning the ‘why’ ‘how’ and ‘what if’ of everything still exists today, it is a part of who I am and greatly influences my approach to painting. For me, being an artist isn’t just about creating a beautiful work of art, which I do hope to achieve, but it is also the feeling of joy, surprise and wonder in the making of it. Using the simple tools of paint, ink, charcoal, paper, brushes and canvas can result in an unending variety of approaches to painting, styles and subject matter. Each painting I approach with anticipation as to how it will look in the end and wonder what I will learn on the way to creating it. I don’t use a particular method of painting or start with a well-defined vision of the final outcome. It is more a trust that using sound principles of art and design, with a willingness to try something I haven’t tried before, can result in something exciting and new to look at. It is with this challenge of taking a blank, flat sheet of paper or canvas and turning  it into a seemingly living, three-dimensional world that keeps my passion and curiosity alive. Using the right color, making the right lines, creating the needed shapes and spaces that the painting demands, will hopefully result in the reward of a painting well done. What inspires me the most is hearing from another, that the work I have created, has emotionally touched or inspired them in some meaningful way.
