An example of fine art by Elliott West

Photo of Elliott West

Elliott was born in Charleston, South Carolina, grew up, and has lived most of her life in the low country of South Carolina.  She graduated from The University of South Carolina with a degree in Early Childhood Education.  She began her teaching career in Ft. Worth, Texas.  Upon returning to South Carolina in 1978, she continued her career in education, teaching for the Berkeley County School District.  After a twenty-eight year teaching career, Elliott decided to test the waters in a new career, her second love, fine art.  She has studied under many notable artists in classes and workshops, which has helped to motivate her desire to learn as much as possible and apply that knowledge to her work.  Elliott has studied under Joyce Hall, Martin Ahrens, Chris Groves, James Patterson, Luanna Luconni Winner, Rick Reinert, and Mary Whyte to name a few.  Elliott draws inspiration for her work from her native South Carolina low country, with its Southern charm, found in the people, places, and things that have been such a positive influence in her life.  Elliott enjoys painting who and what she loves!!
Elliott's favorite medium is oil, with pastel being a close second.  Her subject matter varies; however, local southern architecture appeals to her, as do pets and people alike.  Her work speaks to the connectedness one has to the people, places, and things one experiences in life on a day to day basis.  Elliott believes that her artistic pursuit is a therapeutic process of constant observation, learning, imagining, and then transforming pigment into a thing of beauty.
