An example of fine art by Elizabeth Upton

Photo of Elizabeth Upton

Elizabeth Upton grew up in Stuart, Florida and spent the majority of her childhood outside enjoying nature, playing sports, creating music, and finding outlets for her creative energy. In 2016, she graduated from Swarthmore College with a major in studio art and moved into Philadelphia to continue her training in oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She attended the University of Pennsylvania Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Program from 2017 - 2019 and hopes to attend medical school.
Elizabeth's preferred medium is oil painting. She enjoys toeing the line between abstraction and reality in her landscapes. Many of her paintings are done with palette knife and brush, and she enjoys working with varying thicknesses of paint, many times building up and scraping away color to add depth and texture. When creating a piece, she usually begins with a memory of a location and then tries to capture the feeling of being in that environment. By making her paintings less representational, she hopes her works can connect with their audience in ways that are unique to each viewer, and conjure different memories or interpretations.
Although Elizabeth's career path is now in medicine, she looks forward to finding ways to combine her love of these two fields and use the training she has received as an artist to strengthen the future skills she will need as a physician. She knows painting will be a lifelong pursuit, and she has no doubt that art and creative thinking will always remain an important part of her life.
