Biography


“As an artist, I take those fleeting moments found in everyday life and create a sense of permanence. The subjects of my paintings, whether a figure, an animal or common objects, will at first dominate the viewer's attention. Upon closer inspection, the role that color theory plays in my work becomes more evident, suggesting form, movement and atmosphere. This is particularly the case when I am using the pastel medium. It is the use of color theory and optical mixing which I hope will give the viewer pause, and a reason to remain with the image and its narrative indefinitely.”
 
Elaine’s spacious studio overlooks the flower gardens and horses on her farm in Eastern Connecticut. She received her BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design in New York City, and furthered her studies with classes and workshops at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. 
 
Elaine is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and Connecticut Pastel Society, and is an elected member of both the American Artists Professional League and Connecticut Women Artists. She has won numerous awards in juried exhibitions, including the Pastel Society of America, Connecticut Pastel Society and Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. She recently won the “Juror’s Choice - First Place” award at an exhibition titled “Animal Kingdom” at the Lyme Art Association (2020). Elaine’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the country, most notably the National Arts Club, New York City; Slater Memorial Museum, Norwich, CT; the International Museum of the Horse, Lexington, KY; and local galleries such as Lyme Art Association and Mystic Art Museum. Articles about Elaine and her work have appeared in publications such as American Artist Magazine; Pastel Journal; Rural Heritage; Polo; Equine Images; Driving Digest; and Acres Magazine, and has graced the cover of Connecticut Horse Magazine (Nov/Dec 2020).
