My interest in the landscape of Arizona, northern New Mexico and southern Colorado began when I started collecting emerging native American artists in the late Nineties. A chance visit to La Posada - an old Harvey House in Winslow, Arizona - opened my eyes to the rich history and mingling of Anglo, Spanish and native cultures in the Southwest of the Twenties and Thirties. The paintings of Los Cinco Pintores, Maynard Dixon and the Santa Fe and Taos Schools captured the magic of that moment in time and reawakened an interest in landscape painting that began with my discovery of Cezanne as a young man. My challenge now is to paint the landscape in abstract planes of color that your eyes can resolve into familiar shapes of blue mountains, chaparral, pinyon and chamisa. Today I make my home on an old cattle ranch south of Santa Fe, New Mexico where I can pursue my passion of painting landscapes that capture the romance and majesty of the still unspoiled Southwest.
