Artist Donald Darst

An example of fine art by Donald Darst

Photo of Donald Darst

Originally from Kentucky, settling in Texas, but traveling throughout the country, Donald paints America.   HIs landscapes in harmonious color exhibit a peaceful mood with subtle impressionist flare.   His still lifes are typically collections of early or native Americana done with deep shadow and bursts of light.   His paintings of people and animals whether up close or in a landscape tell stories and evoke feeling.
Donald's studio and home are in Grey Forest, Texas.    His late wife, Linda, was a distinguished potter and acclaimed rug hooker.   He has three children and three grandchildren.   Rescue dogs, Wrigley and Mac, run the place and as Don says, "its hard to say who is the pet and who the owner".   He served in the Air Force as a Russian linguist, worked in IT technology, and has a Masters in Adult Learning which he now applies to his teaching of oil painting.
Whether in plein air or painting in the studio, Don enjoys the process and talking to people about it.   He paints a variety of subjects with pallet knife or brush, and sometimes rags or paper towels.   He teaches, or as he says "coaches", in oil painting at his studio and does demonstrations at his galleries.
You can find Donald's work in Carriage House Gallery in Boerne and in Helotes Gallery in Helotes.   Don is a partner in both galleries, recently opening Helotes Gallery representing over 50 artists.
