Biography

Diane Stoffel is a native of Rochester, New York and has worked in and around art since graduating from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1971. Professionally, she owned an advertising art business, taught art (K-12), and worked as an archaeologist in New York and New Mexico. Following a move to an Iowa farm with her spouse and two sons in 1999, she took up painting again in her studio, remodeled from a 1908 garage, once her sons were in high school.

Diane primarily works in oils, and mixed media, and has shown work in the Council Bluffs, IA/Omaha, NE area at Louisville Gallery, Las Artes Cultural Center, Council Bluffs Senior Center Gallery and the two Hot Shops Galleries. Diane had her first solo show at Creighton University’s Lied Gallery (2008). The exhibit, entitled “Construction of Meaning” showcased Stoffel’s work investigating socio-political topics.

In 2008-09 Diane created a series of 20 large abstract paintings inspired by Google Earth satellite images. The series was shown in a year-long, exclusive exhibit at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs. A smaller selection of the series was shown in Montana at The Drawing Room as a part of Livingston, MT’s Summer Art Walk (2010).

An interest in “Plein Air” painting brought Diane to join Loess Hills Plein Air Artists in 2010. She participated in plein air contests including Paint Brownville (NE) 2010-14, Door County Plein Air Quick Paint 2013, En Plein Air in Corning, IA 2014 and 2016, En Plein Air competition in Malvern, IA 2012-14, Catari’s Fresh Paint in Amana Colonies, IA 2015 and 2017, and Paint the Beach, Fort Myers Beach, FL in 2015. Diane organized Council Bluffs’ 1st and 2nd Annual Paint the Bluffs Plein Air Contest in 2013 and 2014. Annual painting trips with members of Loess Hills Plein Air Artists to the Niobrara River and the Sandhills of western Nebraska produced many paintings and great friendships.
