Artist's Statement
As a toddler, I already was carefully observing the world around me and drawing constantly, whether on paper or bedroom walls (to gentle reprimands).  Fortunately, my arts-loving parents were forgiving and encouraging. Throughout school years and into adulthood I explored many 2D and 3D mediums, but pen-and-inks and oils -- later replaced by acrylics -- always spoke to me. They still do.
Rather than strict adherence to a signature style or subject matter,  creative impulse determines my interpretation and medium.
With brush strokes resembling the lush texture of oils, my acrylic paintings are expressive representations.  They may be realistic, Impressionist in a contemporary manner, or a blend of the two, but my goal is to embrace viewers' feelings visually, and to start a conversation or a story that can be fueled by their imagination.
Pen and ink? That's a whole other story.  Literally.  Different medium, different approach; a way to celebrate my abiding love for the power and beauty of line.  Here, within the realm of black on white, ideas and imagery emerge from lines, liberated and flowing unfettered to interpret emotion, movement, the ephemeral.

For artists, painting can be a form of meditation.  In the studio I am in a cocoon of calm when touching paint to canvas or ink to paper, and the passage of time floats on gossamer wings (thank you, Emily Dickinson).  While my signature marks a piece as finished, it is the doing -- overcoming creative challenges along the way -- which is most rewarding and which completes my personal journey.  The hope, of course, is that the viewer's journey with it has only just begun.

Diana studied painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York, earned a B.A. from Bennington College with a double major in art history and studio art, and did graduate study in fine arts [...]
