The Artist Says:

I'm inspired by people and figures in general. When I paint, I look for ways to emphasize the drama and story behind the subjects I'm painting. I love to use light and different aspects of painting to ad to the concept I have in mind. For me It's important that people will relate to my artwork in some way, whether It's on a spiritual or emotional level.

Dewald grew up on a farm in Marble Hall, Limpopo. He currently lives in Germiston and is married to his wife Liesl. Together they have two beautiful daughters. Dewald was always passionate about drawing and painting. After completing his bachelors of divinity degree in Fine Arts (2008), the institute where he studied offered him the opportunity to teach fine art to 1st and 2nd year students. He continued to teach at the Umdali institute of creative arts for about 8 years.
Dewald's earlier working style was very illustrative and influenced by graphic novels and character design. His father, who also painted from time to time, owned a collection of art history books. He was always inspired by the realism of the old masters and how they depicted drama in their paintings. His own style of painting later became more realistic as he learned how to paint in oils. There's a conceptual quality in his work which is evident in the way he uses light and color. He especially loves to paint figures and portraits.
Dewald has taken part in numerous art exhibitions, productions and shows. In 2020 he won first prize for his painting "Guardian" and was featured on a local radio station called Pretoria FM.
