An example of fine art by Derek Petre

“Inspiration sets in as I look in awe and wonder at God’s creation. Its wonder seems immeasurable as I try to comprehend the number of watering holes, river bends, valleys, cliffs, summits, or hollers similar to the insignificant one I’m enjoying at the moment. I take time to study and appreciate the subtleties that my subconscious already understands as the world around me. I think of Mark telling me, “only suggest and let the viewer fill in the blanks”. It works because our subconscious knows the world around us, maybe better than our conscious. Our daily rush drowns out the realization and appreciation for the beauty around us. Painting for me is a chance to slow down and appreciate.”
Derek began oil painting at the age of 14 in a frame shop and art supply store in a small town in Northeast Missouri. His middle school class was to job shadow someone in the career field of their choice. Due to his interest in art and sculpting he choose Lynn Sadler, the owner/operator and paint instructor of Lynn’s House of Art. He got as far as to earn an honorable mention in the federal Jr. Duck Stamp Competition in High School before his love of building things lead him away from art to a degree in civil engineering. After several years away from painting, he picked up his brushes and began studying with Kansas City Artist Mark Weber. Derek now resides in Overland Park KS. Derek has been showing at First Art Gallery of Olathe since 2016. His original oils and giclee prints are available as well as commissions upon request.
