Derek Olinger is an American Artist from California. He began his career painting under the tutelage of contemporary painter and craftsman Daniel Herron at the White Rabbit Design Studio. Olinger continued his studies in painting and drawing in workshops with internationally renowned instructor Warren Chang. Thereafter, Olinger received full-time, classical training in drawing as a student of celebrated author/instructor Juliette Aristides, at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, WA. After returning from the academy, Olinger became an artist's assistant for CAC figurative Gold Medal winner Warren Chang; a 4 year apprenticeship that included numerous painting and figure drawing workshops, private lessons with Chang, commissioned collaborative work, and weekly figure painting.  Olinger also modeled for several of Chang's celebrated narrative figure paintings.  Other notable influences are the mentoring friendships with professional writer/novelist Alan Marcus, who wrote scripts for feature films and T.V. dramas for MGM Studios, and with internationally known colorist painter Keith Lindberg.
Derek Olinger recently completed a series of vibrant, colorful paintings based on his surroundings and experiences during the creation, titled Paradise Journey.  Now, he is working on a new series of large oil paintings best described as Magic Realism.  In 1925 German historian and art critic Franz Roh coined the term Magic Realism to describe modern realist paintings with fantasy or dream-like subjects. The literary world went further; within the realm of a narrative mode, Magic Realism relies upon the presentation of real, imagined or magical elements as if they were real. It relies upon realism, but only so that it can stretch what is acceptable as real to its limits. The work is marked by a strong presence of the unusual and the fantastic.
