Derek Mueller was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1958.  From an artistic family, he was surrounded by ancestral paintings and art books during his formative years.  His great grandfather, Eduardo Cerutti, painted presidential portraits and was a personal friend of Bartolomé Mitre (in office 1861-1868.)  He was known for his painting commemorating the inauguration of Argentina's first railroad in 1857. He was also an expert at copying the paintings of other artists, which he would give to the family as gifts. This would have a profound influence on Derek’s interest in classical realism. Derek’s father being from Ohio, the family moved to the US soon after he was born, and in 1964 they relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area.  Derek’s primary preoccupation from an early age was drawing things from his imagination, and like his great grandfather, copying the works of other artists to hone his skills.
One of Derek’s major influences was Norman Rockwell.  He first became aware of Rockwell’s work through his Boy Scout handbook, and later saw a traveling exhibit of his original oil paintings.  He began to make small copies of Rockwell paintings from the images he saw in books and credits this practice with teaching him the basics of what makes great art. In addition to Rockwell, Mueller cites JC Leyendecker, NC Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Dean Cornwell and others as strong influences on his work. He believes that all serious artists should study the artists of the “Golden Age of Illustration” and aspire to their standards of beauty and academic excellence. Old masters such as Rembrandt, DaVinci, Michelangelo and John Singer Sargent should also be studied. Derek has an extensive collection of art books and he has given lectures on the paintings and techniques of Norman Rockwell.
