Debra Self lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has been a Chinese brush painter for nineteen years. She has studied Chinese brush painting, both in the United States with master calligraphers, as well as in China at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. She has taught in China on two occasions.  She is a member of the Art of Ink in America, www.artofinkinamerica.com, International Chinese Calligraphic Art & Chinese Ink Painters Society, and Ja Yu Kuan chapter of the American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting. She is past  president of the board of directors of Marin Society of Artists.
She has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and two graduate degrees in law.  She is currently in a program to obtain a Masters Degree in Eastern Classics at St. John's College.
She has exhibited her work in California, Oregon, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, China, France, Thailand and Australia.
The focus of her work is contemporary Chinese calligraphy and, on the more whimsical side, cats. She uses traditional brush and bamboo pen tools with ink, shuen paper and mixed media to create original work within the traditions of the medium.
