Artist Statement :
I believe what sets artists apart from others who do not paint or draw is our ability to see in shapes, patterns and expressive color. Sometimes this includes attention to detail, sometimes it is our ability to rearrange and emphasize the essence of the subject. Taking this artistic license is a joy for me. My work can be representational, with a light impressionistic blend into whimsy. I love the immediacy and flow of watercolor, the pure pigment colors of pastel, the tactile nature of acrylic collage & mixed media.
Artistic license is a joy for me. You will see a lovely mix of these mediums in my paintings. Sometimes this includes some detail or a loose play with all the mediums and subjects. As the saying goes I am so grateful to be doing what I love!
Debra was born in Calgary Alberta and since childhood has always had a passion for painting & drawing. Her training started in Alberta where she studied Chinese brush painting, watercolor, acrylics, & design. After moving to the West Coast and raising her family Debra continued to study with artists like Judy Morris, Tom Lynch, Brent Heighten & Mike Svob. From the beginning of her career Debra’s paintings have met with broad acclaim. She has been instructing art for over 25 years and finds sharing her knowledge with students important for her as a painter. In 2010 Debra opened Gallery 68 in Surrey BC where she taught and exhibited for many years. Just recently Debra has retired from instructing, & has moved to the Interior of BC. She now works mostly online & does 1 or 2 shows a year. She occasionally does workshops for art groups or private sessions plus commissions.Associations:Associations Past and Present.
