The Artist Says:

I am a farmer’s daughter.   My love of nature was fostered on a grain and dairy farm near Saybrook, Illinois.  I later studied and taught classical piano, and most recently have pursued a nursing degree.  Each of these life experiences have informed my development as an artist.

For over 10 years, much of my free time has been spent painting “en plein air”, which is a French term meaning “in the open air.”  Plein air painting combines all that I love within a single activity: painting, spending time in the outdoors, and listening to the sounds and music of nature. Many of the paintings you see here began with a plein air study…… prizes often hard-won as I frequently endured wind, rain, humidity, heat and mosquitoes.  At the same time it has become my meditative practice.

As a nurse, I have witnessed how our health has become negatively impacted by escalating stress and anxiety, which I believe is partly due to our detachment from nature, and our attachment to technology. As an artist, my goal is to invite the viewer back to nature and to take a moment to stop, unplug, and look.  I want to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that exists here on this familiar spot of earth that I have come to know so well.  I do not merely want to capture these images with my brush; rather, with careful, colorful strokes, I want you to see with new eyes the unique beauty of the Midwest……and to hear the prairie song.

Biography

I am a farmer’s daughter.  My mother is a vocalist and a musician.  I was raised in a home filled with music, on a grain and dairy farm near Saybrook, Illinois.  I’ve never wandered far from that place, which is here in the heart of McLean County, ……..which is in the midst of the great Illinois prairie. The prairie and music are part of my DNA.

For over 10 years, much of my free time has been spent painting “en plein air”, which is a French term meaning “in the open air.”  Plein air painting combines all that I love within a single activity…..creating art, spending time in the outdoors, and listening to the sounds and music of nature. Many of the paintings you see here began with a plein air study……a prize often hard-won, as I struggled with wind, rain, humidity, heat and mosquitoes.  At the same time I was able to be witness to nature’s most amazing displays and have many stories of encounters with deer, eagles, coyotes and curious bystanders. With each painting in my growing collection, I am able to recall clearly every detail of that day I spent trying to record what I saw directly in front of me.

As an artist, I work hard to develop paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that exists here on this familiar spot of earth that I have come to know so well.   There may be no mountain vistas here, nor swaying palm trees on exotic beaches. But we do have sky. We do have quiet streams that meander through rolling fields of green and gold.  I do not merely want to capture these images with my brush; rather, with careful, colorful strokes, I want you to see with new eyes the unique beauty [...]
