The Artist Says:

"Beauty comes in many forms."

Dawn Safarik is a Kansas City based artist who creates portraits in oils, watercolors, and colored pencil.  While mostly self taught, she took some art classes while in college.  She has been drawing and painting for well over 40 years now.
She has done many commissions of beloved pets, and her work is in collections around the world including Scotland, Africa, and Russia. Over the years, her subject matter has changed.  After doing mostly horses and wildlife, in 2013 she found herself drawn to the human figure. Working in graphite and then colored pencils, she won several first place ribbons and Best of Show at the Alaska State Fair. Upon moving from Alaska to Kansas City in 2016, she entered several juried shows. One of her pieces was selected for inclusion in Overland Park Art at the Center. Her work was seen at Images Art Gallery, and one of her pieces won an honorable mention at the Images Art Gallery Juried Art Show in 2017. Most recently, her leopard painting, "Intense Moment," won Best in Show at the Images Art Gallery 2022 Juried Art Show.
Details are important in her work, which is why she loves to draw.  More recently, she has been working on oil paintings.  Her current subject matter is portraits, human, equine, and pets. She works in her studio in her home in Kansas City.

My work has to go beyond the mere portrayal [...]
