An example of fine art by David Bates

I was born in Detroit, MI in 1968 and studied at the College for Creative Studies majoring in illustration. After graduating I apprenticed with McNamara and Associates, one of the last remaining illustration studios in the Motor City. There I was able to train under my former instructor Max Altekruse, along with many other accomplished illustrators. I then spent the next 20 years working as a graphic artist in Michigan and Missouri. I moved to Colorado with my wife and two sons in 2013. Inspired by the large, beautiful landscapes of the Rockies I felt a strong desire to begin exploring a fine art career. Though self-taught, as a fine artist my heroes in illustration have always been bold painters like N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, and Frederic Remington. Having spent so many years working with teams on commercial art projects the allure of creating art born solely from my own instincts and observations of nature was thrilling. Those years spent in graphic arts have given me a strong eye for composition and made me a quick judge of dramatic imagery. I find that the beauty of God's creation provides an endless amount of inspiration to keep me filling canvases for a lifetime.
