I was raised in Corona del Mar, Santa Barbara and Hawaii. My maternal grandfather, Fredric Putnam Hope, was an Academy Award winning MGM art director in the 1930s. My grandmother, Thelma Paddock Hope, was an active California landscape and portrait painter, MGM set artist and college art teacher. I spent many summers living at her beach house in Corona del Mar where I gained an appreciation of the life of a working artist. My mother, Hawaii watercolor and portrait artist Marcia Hope Young (Jones), especially encouraged my interest and curiosity with art.
Since the ocean was always my family's playground, I grew up in or on the water... sailing, surfing and diving. Needless to say, it wasn't a major leap for me to spend a few years as a boatswain's mate in the Coast Guard. I then changed course and pursued two degrees in horticulture, eventually graduating from Cal Poly Pomona in 1977. For the next 40 years, I worked as a greenhouse grower of tropical plants; both working for others and owning two wholesale greenhouse businesses in the process. In 2017, I made the inevitable transition from horticulture to painting.Other than learning through family osmosis and college art classes, I am primarily self-taught. I have studied with Mendocino pallet knife artist Hope Stevenson, Capistrano Beach artist Robin Hall, artist Charles Waldman of Sonora and continue collaboration with my cousin, Laguna Beach artist, Fredric Hope. I live in the Village of Arroyo Grande on the Central Coast of California and paint whenever the coast is clear.
