Dan studied painting and sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he was especially inspired by two of his teachers, Hobson Pittman and Morris Blackburn. His classmates included David EM, a pioneer in computer generated art and Dan Camp, a prominent San Diego portrait painter and art instructor.  For the next five years, Dan produced large welded metal sculptures in his Jim Thorpe, PA studio and assisted with the construction of sculptures of German-born Klaus Ihlenfeld.
He returned to painting after an engineering career during which he won multiple awards as a designer of innovative bridges, found both in the United States and internationally. He served on the national Transportation Research Board Committee on Bridge Aesthetics and presented papers on this topic at national bridge conferences.
Since his 2011 move to Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, where he spent summers as a child, Dan has become a member of the Whidbey Art Gallery.  He is a juried member of Oil Painters of America (OPA) and most recently placed 4th overall in the international “Seascapes” Art competition held by lightspacetime online art gallery and was selected as a participant in the 2015 Whidbey Island Frogwell Institute “Forgery show” and the Coupeville Arts Festival.
Dan is also active in the arts community. He served on the governing board of the Oak Park Art League and is now on the Council of the Whidbey Art Gallery. He has anchored a weekly plein air group which draws indoors when it rains! Additional, he helped initiate a Friday morning discussion group where artists can bring their work for peer review. He has also been a guest speaker at an Artists of South Whidbey monthly meeting, presenting an outline of concepts to be considered when beginning a painting and served as Juror for the 2015 Fine [...]
