Biography



 
 
Dale’s first brush with art was as a child living in northeast Ohio where his neighbor was an amateur artist. In the neighbors backyard was a work shed that was used as a painting space by the Grandfather who lived with the family during warm weather months. Dale would wonder into his shed from time to time to watch him paint. Those happenstance sessions sparked Dale's interest in painting.
 
Without access to formal training at that early age Dale practiced with his limited understanding of the process and readily available materials, making his own frames and stretching old table cloths as canvas.
 
Dale’s formal education was in industrial design earning his degree from Kent State University (B.S. Industrial Design) in 1982. He enjoyed a full career designing and marketing various plastic “functional packages” including child resistant – yes, those which adults find hard to open. The curriculum contained a modicum of art history which exposed him to fine art, specifically late 19th century Russian and American artists that furthered his interest in painting, and remains an influence on his work today. Now free of commercial responsibilities Dale is at liberty to simply pursue “art for art’s sake”.
 
Dale's manner of painting renders a loose realistic style that leaves generous evidence of descriptive brushwork. Mixing that style with content pulled from a moment of observation he looks to draw viewers’ attention to the less obvious compositions found in common everyday settings. Compositions and subject matter that combined foment a circumspect sense of contemplation and satisfying recollection. Viewers will find his works approachable, evocative and pleasing to the eye.
 

 
Several of Dale’s works have been juried into national and international competitions. Most recently his painting "Late Afternoon, Early January" was recognized with the Salmagundi Award as juried entry into the Ridgewood Art Institute Exhibition and “Carolina Dunes” won [...]
