Biography

My name is Colleen White and I am a painter living in Portland, Maine.  I work primarily in oil and describe my style as contemporary realism -- even when I push my work toward the abstract, the subject is recognizable.  I prefer to keep the composition of my paintings simple and straightforward.  It is the repetitive patterns of color, form, value and brushwork which serve to hold the viewer's interest, even in the quietest moments represented.  Ultimately, my goal is to share a sense of connection with our common world.

I can get lost in the act of painting.  Whether I am outside with my easel somewhere on the rocky coast of Maine or in my home studio working on a still life, I get pulled into the creative moment through the smell of the paint and the feel of the brush in my hand.  It's exciting to see in my head what I want to put forward on canvas.  Even when it isn't coming together and the rags come out to wipe away a section that isn't working, there is always some kind of surprising result.  I have learned to be patient and to allow the process to unfold in the way that it will.
