Artist Chuck St John

An example of fine art by Chuck St John

Photo of Chuck St John

I was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1955.  My initial exposure to art was through my mother, who worked on portraiture and landscapes in pastels and continues as a professional artist in her own right.  In addition to this influence, I have applied myself to the study of many painters over the years.  My growth as an artist has also been enabled through working with with teachers such as Albert Handell, Henk Pander, Jeanne Rosier Smith, and Richard McKinley.
My work has been shown in the following exhibits and galleries:
Celebration of Creativity (Beaverton, OR - 2020)
Wallowa Festival of Art (Joseph, OR - 2018); First prize, Drawing
Wallowa Festival of Art (Joseph, OR - 2017)
Beaverton Arts Mix (Beaverton, OR – 2014, 2016)
Chehalem Cultural Center, Oregon Artist’s Showcase (Newberg, Oregon, 2013)
Guardino Gallery (Portland, OR - 2008)
Beet Gallery (Portland, OR - 2007 - 08)
Southwest Gallery (Tigard, OR - 1996)
I have contributed work for inclusion in various non-profit art auctions, benefiting such organizations as the Beaverton Education Fund, Oregon College of Art and Craft, and the Unitarian Church in Portland.
Although comfortable working in various mediums, I have focused my most recent work on pastel landscapes.  I have spent time in the National Parks and the State Forests of the Pacific Northwest, and find the opportunities for plein aire painting particularly exciting.  This region is renowned for its diversity of both climate and  flora, and it provides ample opportunities for explorations of color, light, and form.  I hope my interpretations provide the viewer a chance to appreciate and value the natural beauty around us.
*A word about purchasing my work: all pieces are shipped unframed in a protective sleeve, placed inside a foam core enclosure and surrounded by shock absorbing material.  I prefer to ship unframed because you are the best judge of what frame works in your particular setting.  Shipping costs [...]
