The Artist Says:

I am inspired to paint, by some special element that I see in a subject, not by a desire to make a photo-realistic image of it.  If I find a subject challenging, humorous, beautiful or unusual I want to capture those things in my painting.  The subject matter is simply there for reference, to help me understand while I paint.
How would you describe your painting style?Literal, representational (as opposed to abstract)
Do you come from a painting family, or did you pick it up on your own?It seems to have come out of the blue, although there are artistic people in my extended family. My father, was a statistician and drew funny characters. My mother was a journalist. My sister is artistic, but specialized in Anthropology. My brother loves to debate and went into law. A common thread can be found among all of our skills: a cerebral approach to our work with a desire to explore, analyze and problem-solve.
What have you had the most fun painting?People’s pets, painting for people, painting from my imagination
What have you had the most difficulty painting?Abstract paintings are difficult for me to achieve. I just make the painting more and more literal. When I paint from my imagination, I have a tendency to paint literally rather than abstractly and I paint what I see and know, rather than using colors and paint strokes to express how I feel. I wish I could paint more loosely and more boldly.
What helps you with your painting?Turning my painting upside-down and looking at it for a day, or looking at it in a mirror. The next step then becomes clearer.
How would you like to be remembered?Funny, entertaining

Born in England, Christina spent her formative years in Morocco, Ghana, and Ethiopia followed by several years living in France, England and the United States. She is now settled in Seattle, Washington.
Her artistic talent was discovered at age 5 in Ghana when she made friends with a classmate who could draw people. Together they were chosen by teachers to make posters and chalk murals on classroom blackboards for holiday occasions. And so a life-long passion was awakened. Later, in art school, she was inspired mainly by the works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Degas, Hogarth and the Impressionists. She graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from UC, Santa Cruz . To this she added a further degree in Graphic Arts Design from the London College of Printing. In England she worked as a Graphic Designer at The National Gallery and at The British Library. After moving to Seattle, she worked in Digital Media at Microsoft, and landed an illustration assignment, for an educational CDROM, for young children. Christina met her favorite watercolor instructor, Jan Hart while attending several of her workshop classes in Seattle. Here, Christina gained a strong sense of color use. Another influence was Tamara Codor, from whom she learned much about the structure of the human figure.
