My journey as an artist has been wondrous, as I look back and try to encapsulate. Perhaps it began at age two, when I crayoned the bedroom wall even after being chastened for it. Thirty-six years later, the same chastisers were amazed at the viewing of my first public mural. My introduction to the heady aroma of oil painting came at age fourteen, when I took lessons from a neighbor for one dollar, while painting on pieces of roller-shade. These events apparently helped shape my direction.I became an art teacher after graduating from the University of Washington. It continued for fourteen years in overseas appointments while my husband was in the Foreign Service. Then, I was admitted to the Caulfield Institute in Melbourne, Australia, for two years of their Fine Art program. After returning to the U.S., I worked as a mural artist for 14 years in Portland and Seattle. Then Kauai called in 2008 and my career as an artist began in earnest. Eleven years later, and a move to Taos, it is still oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and mixed media painting which expresses my joy in my surroundings. It is color which catches me first—sometimes subtle; other times saturated. Using a wide variety of mediums helps me find my voice for each subject. For instance, my flower blossoms have a unique glow which I can only achieve with oil glazes. My forest paintings need the quickly-built textures of acrylic or mixed media.
